Motorcycles at the Rally 2009
ISDT stands for International Six Days Trial which was one of the most important sporting contests right up to 1980. It was a reliability event for production motorcycles but eventually degenerated into a long distance enduro for specialized cross-country motorcycles. In 1953 the event was held in Czechoslovakia and this Royal Enfield was ridden by Johnny Brittain as part of the winning GB Trophy team; Johnny himself winning an individual Gold Medal. Have a close look at this bike and note all the variations from standard – for servicing “in the field”. Thank you for bringing it, John. The photo is of John’s bike taken at an earlier Woodcote Rally.
Another important machine visiting us is a 1951 Velocette KTT Mark VIII. These were the company’s production racing bikes with overhead camshaft engines dating back originally to 1928. The Mark VIII re-appeared after the war in 1947. Dennis Frost is displaying this Mark VIIII. It was owned and raced by well-known TT racer Arthur Lavington. Arthur campaigned KTTs for many years, well after they were no longer competitive. No photo for this machine as it will be its first appearance here. |
